We often think we don’t have a say on how our life story plays out. We call it destiny or fate. We like to think we are either destined for failure or for glory. Some people are simply born lucky, while others are not. Imagine if that was true? What would be the point of trying? That when we are born we are all handed a random playlist and we hit the shuffle button and we take whatever comes out way. That success in life is like winning the lottery and we all know nobody wins that.

Life doesn’t have to be that way. We do have a say on how our life turns out. Some people are born with amazing talents but even they sometimes go unnoticed. It’s only when we believe we can’t choose how our life turns out is when we let things play out for us. It’s as if our lives were playing on shuffle and we can’t do anything about what happens or plays next.

“If you can imagine it, you can make it part of your life plan.”

This life on shuffle is our choice. We can turn it off and be in control of what direction we go. We often don’t want to take control of our lives because we are simply scared of failing. Wanting something so bad that we never get it, fear of jinxing our future simply because we want it. It’s only our fault when we don’t do something. Most of the time it’s because we can’t see ourselves having it, or believing we don’t deserve it. Just thinking we are not going to get something is enough to hinder our chances of actually getting it.

Ask and you shall receive.

I didn’t have many life goals when I was a young girl. I can remember wanting to graduate high school and wanting to go to college but I never envisioned how my life would be after I graduated. I didn’t see myself as a confident professional independent woman in full control of her life guiding her path wherever I wanted to go next. I guess I saw my future as successful if I wasn’t living with my parents at 30, let alone dream of greatness for myself.

I got married at a young age and my life took a completely different path. It’s like when you’re driving fast on a freeway (life) and suddenly realizing you missed your exit and you see the place you wanted to go just pass you by. All you can do is wave goodbye and hope one day you will run into it again. That destination was our initial life goal. That place we think we are going but don’t simply because we didn’t have it in our GPS. I got on the freeway of life and missed many exits, many destination, and the life I thought I was going towards never happened. I was just randomly waiting for the next thing to play out for me because I didn’t have a life plan.

You will never get there if you don’t know where you are going.

This is why it’s so important to have a life plan and goals and do one thing at a time. Make a timeline of where you want to be 5, 10, 15 and 20 years from now. I have one and I look at it every year, it’s one of the few things that always gets transferred to my new planner.

Be as specific as possible and dream as big as you can. Nothing is off limits. If you can imagine it, you can make it part of your life plan. This is not a bucket list of a I would like to do these things one day list. This is your life goals, your future, the path you want your life to take. They say you will never get there if you don’t know where you are going and it is true. Trust me, the 20 years time will be here before you know it.

Dream as big as you can. Nothing is off limits. If you can imagine it, you can make it part of your life plan.

Whenever we change something in the now, it drastically alters your future life. You think you will get back to it someday, but soon enough you find yourself way off course that you feel it’s impossible to return to where you started. Once you lose control of your path, your life will turn into a life on shuffle. You merely handle things as they come, whatever they may be. Family, kids, bills, responsibilities, more bills. You become buried in all these things you forget to even think about yourself.

It’s up to us to make our goals happen.

We all have that deep burning desire to do something we’ve always wanted to do but never did. Maybe deep down inside we believed they were too big of dreams for us. There are many reasons why we give up on our dreams and settle for something else and just hope it will one day happen. But merely hoping it will someday happen is not enough. We must actively seek it. We must actively search for it. We must actively find it and we must actively hit the play button in that direction. No more leaving things to chance or to a random shuffle. It’s up to us to make them happen now.

This brings me to the good news that just because something hasn’t happened, it doesn’t mean it will never happen. What do we do when we miss our exit to a gas station we wanted to go to? We just look for the next gas station up ahead and make a new path. We can create new destinations along our way all the time. If something didn’t happen then, it can still happen now. This is an amazing thing! That’s the beautiful thing about life that it’s always changing. We are always evolving and learning and maturing. Every year we get to say “Happy New Year!” and we make new plans and goals for a new beginning. Well it’s time we start saying “Happy New Me!”

Make your life goals as early as possible.

If you always wanted to get married and never did, if you always wanted to have children but haven’t, if you always wanted to start a business but couldn’t, if you always wanted to finish college but didn’t. All these life goals don’t have to happen on a linear scale. Life is not perfect, we usually don’t have this straight line from point A to point B, we often zigzag around picking up knowledge as we go. As long as we continue to work towards our main life goals we made for ourselves we are on the right path of life.

So go make your life goals as early as possible. Today! There are many things I wanted to accomplish in life but I still have time. My life is no longer on shuffle. I am in control of my life. I can go forward, backwards, rewind and even change my entire playlist. The only thing that matters is that we are in control of our future and we don’t let our life be randomly controlled for us.
